Do old antifouling layers have to be completely removed?Updated 16 days ago
That depends.
The Recommendation: Complete Removal
We generally recommend completely removing old antifouling layers. This creates the best foundation for a durable F2 coating and ensures lasting adhesion.
The Alternative: Prepare the Surface
However, if you do not completely remove the old layers, that is also fine as long as the existing surface is smooth and sound. Products where this is possible (as long as the surface is intact) include: VC 17m, VC Offshore, Hempel Mille NCT, Seajet 037 Coastal, and International Ultra 300.
- Sanding: Sand the surface evenly with a K120-220 grit until it is smooth and sound.
- Cleaning: Afterward, thoroughly clean the surface with F2 EcoDegreaser to remove all residues and sanding dust.
Sealing: Use F2 Primer as a sealant and adhesive base.
Important Note: Moisture
Moisture in the hull—for example, from osmosis, trapped moisture in old primers, or condensation—must be completely eliminated before the F2 coating is applied. Trapped moisture can lead to the coating blistering or partially peeling later, as the moisture tries to expand or escape.
Important Note: Silicone Antifoulings
F2 is not compatible with silicone antifoulings. Silicone antifoulings must always be completely removed, as F2 does not adhere to these surfaces.
